Enjoy the Outdoors
Get outside and do something as a family. Moms love that! Get everyone together and do the things she loves to do, whether it’s hiking along the lake to a cascading waterfall, taking a slow bike ride on dusty trails through quiet, cool forests, or gliding in a kayak with the loons on Rangeley Lake. Don’t forget to pack a special picnic lunch, since many of the trailheads have picnic tables, perfect for a special Mother’s Day brunch.
The Rangeley Lake Region has plenty of birdwatching, wildlife and wildflower viewing opportunities too. There are still meadows full of daisies, lilies, and lupines, and pretty trillium, trout lily, and violets that have popped up along winding forest trails. The network of trails wandering through Hunter Cove Wildlife Sanctuary is the perfect place to spot birds, reptiles, deer and more.
If mom loves waterfalls, hike along forested trails along gorges and rushing rivers. Small Falls, Cross Canyon, Angel Falls, and Cascade Stream Gorge Trail are just a few to try. The short hike to Angel Falls takes you through an old hardwood forest, where starflower and trillium bloom along the trail. Keep an eye out for the pileated woodpecker, though you may just hear them drumming or hunting for insects. Follow the trail as it crosses a few streams and you’ll be rewarded with a 90-foot waterfall in the shape of an angel’s wing.
Make the hike to the top of Bald Mountain (and the observation tower) and you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the lakes below with a backdrop of rolling mountains, as well as bald eagles nesting in the tops of the trees along the way.
Take Things Easy This Maine Mother’s Day
Mom can take things easy with a stroll into town for a little shopping therapy. She can spend a few hours happily browsing through books and local artwork at Books, Lines and Thinkers, or pick up a few scented candles at Dee’s Place Rangeley Candle Co. Ecopelagicon opens for the season the first weekend of May, so you can be first in line to purchase handcrafted Rangeley and Maine products like Rangeley Balsam air fresheners.
Take a lake cruise. Enjoy time out on the lake, learn about the area from your guide, and watch loons, osprey, and bald eagles hunt for lunch. Rangeley Region Lake Cruises and Kayaks is just one tour company with plenty of options, including a sunset lake cruise.
Do Something Different for Mom
Book a photography tour or a workshop for mom with wildlife and nature photographer Nick Leadley. Stop in at his gallery on Main Street to view his latest photographs and to sign up.
Take mom on a moose safari during your Rangeley Mother’s Day vacation! Hunt for these majestic animals by kayak along the lake’s edge or book a guided tour and increase your chance of seeing a moose or two. Seeing a moose slowly lumbering along is an almost magical experience, a perfect thing to share with mom.
Take things up a notch and tour the region in a seaplane! There are several different seaplane companies and various tours to choose from too, including a tour of the western mountains up to the Canadian border flight. It’s a great way to get a different view on Maine’s beautiful lake region, and it’s a lot of fun.
